With nearly three quarters of a million people, Glasgow is Scotland's largest city, and the surrounding area contains over half of the country's population.
Described as a paradise by such writers as Daniel Defoe in the 18th century, the city, which is dominated by it's 14th century cathedral, nowadays represents the heart of Scottish commerce.
Historically habitation in the area grew up from Iron Age beginnings to be later replaced by Roman influence, but Glasgow itself was founded by St Mungo in the 6th century.
By the 1500's the city was playing a major role in the sugar and tobacco trades to the New World and, as industry grew, coal, iron ore and cotton begun to be exported worldwide.
Glasgow is perhaps best known for shipbuilding and at one point the vast majority of the world's ships were constructed on the Clyde.
